From Disconnected to Complete: How We Rewrote Our Summer Story

A moment of gratefulness settled as the cool breeze blew past. It was the encore song of High Bar Gang with Shari Ulrich and I was reflecting on the past week and how much we had packed in. I was sitting up front alone and Caron was off to the side with a friend. I like to be up close on the benches and Caron likes her own lawn chair. As the song ended I put my arm around her and said "congratulations we've been out 11 nights in a row". She had woken up exhausted that morning and I didn't want to remind her how many nights we had been out.
The past week was full of concerts, picnics, fellowship with friends, volunteering, cleaning, picking up a student etc. In the rush of things I'm guilty of not enjoying the moments enough as they come. This was a moment I breathed and felt thankful for all I had accomplished.
This summer has been the busiest summer we've had. We didn't plan it that way and opportunities fell in our lap and we said yes. A lot of our friends have their own lives, families, responsibilities etc. Being single our life looks a little different and we were feeling a sense of loss and disconnectedness. Instead of moping about it (we did for awhile) we started doing our own thing saying yes to Pickleball, then deciding to add on tennis. We began dabbling in watercolours while continuing to sell at our local outdoor market one day a week. Digging deep into Butchart Gardens concerts has became our escape from the endless responsibilities in our everyday lives. I think the changes surprised me and helped me grow in a new way. Maybe the need to be with those friends has changed as I've broadened my circle and allowed new opportunities in. As I look back this summer feels satisfying, complete and totally different than what I had imagined.
Tell me about a significant memory this summer.
Beautifully undone,
